How to log Line Training & Checking

Check Pilots, Instructors and Line Training Captains can record training and checking on multi-pilot aircraft as follows:



Examiner - Check Pilot


To record Examiner hours, you must:

  • Enable the EXAMINER time field on the Flights - Config page
  • Record your hours as EXAMINER for the flight or simulator check

If you do a lot of simulator checks, you can differentiate your own proficiency check from other crew checks by selecting "CHECK/MY" in the TYPE OF OPERATION field. If this field is not visible, you must enable the field on the Flights - Config page first. However, normally you do not record EXAM time on your own check ride. But still the tag  "CHECK/MY" allows you to find your own checks much easier in the database.


If almost all of your flights or simulator sessions are checks, you can configure autoload EXAM time for all aircraft and simulators.  Read here how to configure autoload:


How to autoload Function & Condition Time



Instructor


To record Instructor hours, you must:

  • Enable the INSTRUCTOR time field on the Flights - Config page
  • Record your hours as INSTRUCTOR for the flight or simulator session


Do not confuse "INSTR" with "Instrument" time.  For instrument time, we use "ACT.INSTR" and "HOOD" as abbreviation.

If almost all of your flights or simulator sessions are instruction, you can configure autoload INSTRUCTOR time for all aircraft and simulators.  Read here how to configure autoload:

Notes


Instructor time in the Line Training & Checking section may differ from Instructor time in the Function section for several reasons:


- in the Line Training & Checking section, hours recorded as Examiner are deducted from the Instructor time, as you cannot act as an instructor and examiner during the same flight or simulator session.  If you are acting as an instructor and check pilot during the same simulator session, we recommend that you log two separate records in the logbook database.


- the Line Training & Checking section only includes Multi Pilot aircraft time. This section does not take into account the Instructor or Examiner time that you log on Single Pilot aircraft.


Line Training Captain


To record hours as Line Training Captain (LTC), you must:

  • Enable the PIC time field and the TYPE OF OPERATION field on the Flights - Config page
  • Record your flight hours as PIC time
  • Select any of the following types of OPERATION for this flight:


- TRNG  (Training)

- FAR141  (14 CFR Part 141 - Pilot Training)

- CAR406  (CARs 406 - Flight Training)


Do not confuse "INSTR" with "Instrument" time.  For instrument time, we use "ACT.INSTR" and "HOOD" as abbreviation.

If almost all of your flights are line training, you can configure autoload PIC time and DEFAULT OPERATION for all aircraft.  Read here how to configure autoload:


How to autoload Function & Condition Time



Captain


The purpose of the Training & Checking section on the Totals page of the mobile apps is to let you understand how much you act as "training or check" pilot and how much you act as PIC without training duties. 


This section will not appear when no training is found in the time frame you select at the top of the Totals page. 


Captain hours in this section are all flights where PIC time is logged, without any checking or training.  Typically, Captain hours are calculated by subtracting Instructor and Examiner time from your PIC time.

Note that the Training & Checking values do not necessarily match the sum of PIC + INSTR + EXAM hours in the Function time section just above (*). It all depends on how you log your hours. For example:


  • When you log 3:00 of PIC and 3:00 of INSTR on a 3-hour flight, only Instructor time is taken into account for this particular chart
  • When you log 200 hours of PIC time and 70 hours of INSTR time as previous time on some aircraft model, this will count as 70 hours of Instructor time and 130 hours of Captain time for this particular chart



This logic gives you the best insight into your duties as training and non-training pilot.





In the above sample chart you see that, while the INSTR and EXAM time from the Training & Checking section are identical to their values in the Functions section, this is not the case for CAPTAIN hours compared to PIC time. This is because some of the PIC time is logged on flights where INSTR or EXAM time is also logged. Those hours are considered training and are thus removed from CAPTAIN (Non Training Duty) time.
